Not too long ago, sake -- Japanese rice wine -- was a drink associated exclusively with Japan. Today, that's no longer so, and people worldwide have come to appreciate the delicate taste of Japanese sake whether served comfortingly warm or refreshingly cold. Even sake tasting events and sake sommeliers have appeared, and the number of sake connoisseurs is rising exponentially. In Japan, sake has traditionally been drunk, especially on auspicious occasions, from a small square wooden box known as a "masu." Originally the masu was used as a measuring cup (approx. 0.18 liter), both for sake and for rice. In its function as a cup, though, is when the masu really gives the greatest pleasure, the smooth feel and elegant fragrance of the wood adding infinitely to the drinking experience. The masu drinking boxes offered by Japan Unique Gifts are handcrafted using the finest hinoki cypress wood from trees at least three centuries old. And unlike many similar items on the market today, our masu are constructed the traditional way: using ingeniously interlocking pieces. No nails or glue are used. With an authentic masu of Japanese cypress, every drinking experience will become an auspicious -- and supremely enjoyable -- occasion. HAND MADE IN JAPAN
